Butterfly Milkweed

(Asclepias tuberosa)

Widely distributed in eastern states, this showy, 1- to 2-foot shrub is a favored food source for monarch butterfly caterpillars, and its decline due to indiscriminate herbicide use is one factor threatening the eastern monarch butterfly population. Flowers appear in late May and continue throughout the summer.
