New York Fern

Thelypteris noveborasensis

With its yellowish-green color and finely subdivided fronds, this fern gives a light, delicate impression. In favorable locations (moist woodlands and acid soil) it can form spreading colonies that cover the forest floor and out-compete seedlings of other plants. This photograph shows particularly well a distinguishing characteristic of this native fern, namely, that the whole leaf, (frond) tapers at both ends, so that the longest leaflets are found around the middle of the leaf, and the shortest ones at its base and tip.
