Joe was born in Sandusky, Ohio and moved to Delray Beach, Florida at the age of 14. His extensive education includes an honors program at Harvard University, two years at Emory University, a M.D. from Duke Medical School, and a Master’s of Science in Otolaryngology from the University of Iowa. During his schooling, Joe was called by the Air Force to serve as the orthopedic surgeon for Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia due to the Vietnam War. He served there for two years. Upon completion of his schooling, the family moved to Lynchburg where he joined with Dr. Max Feinman to establish the practice of Feinman Clark, ENT and Plastic Surgery Inc. Joe retired from the practice after 31 years in 2005.
Elinor Ann was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas and raised in Marietta, Georgia. Her educational background includes courses at both Emory and Duke Universities. After her sons were older, she earned her B.S. in Economics at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and worked for Bank of America for several years. Later, she worked with Joe as Antibiotics Study Coordinator at Blue Ridge ENT & PS.
Joe and Elinor Ann met a t Emory University where they were biology lab partners. They were married in 1962 and have two sons, Evan and Spencer, one step-grandson, Josh, and one granddaughter, Isabella. Both Joe and Elinor Ann enjoy traveling, following Duke Basketball, snow skiing, walking, and reading. Elinor Ann is an EMT and founding member of the ‘99’s, an organization of women pilots. Joe also is a pilot and past president of the Rotary Club of Lynchburg. Both are quite active at First Presbyterian Church where Joe is a deacon and Elinor Ann is an Elder. They have recently been on mission trips to Malawi, Africa, and Gulfport, Mississippi (after Katrina). They are unique in that both Elinor Ann and Joe had parents who lived at Westminster Canterbury, Elinor Clayton Bibb, Chuck Clayton, and Ethel Clark.
