Mary Spence Pollard Acree

A Lynchburg native, Mary Spence was educated in the public school system and attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO. She graduated from the Virginia Institute of Realtors and worked in real estate before working with Meals on Wheels. Mary Spence was executive director of Meals on Wheels, Inc., a non-profit United Way Agency for 19 years.

Mary Spence’s early adult years were devoted to family, homemaking and volunteer work with St. John’s Episcopal Church and Guggenheimer Hospital. She served on the boards of the Junior League of Lynchburg, Kaleidoscope, YMCA, Virginia and Lynchburg Aquatic Leagues, Council of United Way Agencies, and Lynchburg Club of Altrusa International. She also served as Virginia State representative to the National Association of Meals Programs. 

In 1998 the Academy of Women honored Mary Spence as a Woman of Achievement in the field of Human Services.

Mary Spence is the proud mother of two daughters and a son, and the proud grandmother of five grandchildren, ages 12 to 30 years. Her children and their families live in Tennessee and North Carolina. She is a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
