Ben & Elizabeth (Betsy) Smith
Ben was born and raised in Gretna, Virginia. After service in the Navy he earned a B.A. in History from Lynchburg College and later did graduate study in Sociology at the College of William and Mary. He has served as an Historian in the National Park Service, a Sociologist at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, and in several capacities in the Public Affairs Office at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He retired as director of that office and subsequently worked as a consultant to the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Betsy was born in Boston, Massachusetts but moved to Vienna, Virginia as a child. She earned a B.S. in Biology from Lynchburg College and a M.S. in Library and Information Science from The Catholic University of America. She spent 29 years as a librarian and lexicographer (controlled vocabulary specialist) at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Ben and Betsy were married in 1967 at Truro Episcopal Church, Fairfax, Virginia. They have no children. They both enjoy reading, theater and film, music, regional travel, cooking, food and wine. Betsy also enjoys herb gardening.
