Jerry was born in Durham, North Carolina and moved to Norfolk, Virginia where he finished grade school and high school. He attended William & Mary at Norfolk (now Old Dominion University) for his first two years of college and then transferred to Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he earned his B.S. He continued his studies at The University of Virginia earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry. He first worked at the DuPont Plant in Richmond for about two years, and then decided he wanted to change his focus to teaching at Virginia Commonwealth University where he was Professor of Chemistry until his retirement.
Susan was born in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, where she lived until her family moved to Daytona Beach, Florida. She lived in Daytona until she enrolled at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She worked as a Library Assistant at VCU in Media Resources.
Jerry and Suan have two sons and two grandchildren. Jerry and Susan are both active in their Richmond Parish, St. Mary’s Episcopal. They enjoy traveling, hiking, gardening, reading, and sports. Jerry is a member of the American Chemical Society, The Virginia Academy of Science where he was Executive Officer. Susan volunteers at St. Mary’s Hospital, the Goochland County Fire and Rescue Auxiliary, and the Goochland Free Clinic
