Sherwood was born in Williamson, West Virginia. He is a graduate of Washington & Lee University and Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. He is a Presbyterian minister, having served pastorates in Virginia, West Virginia, and Florida. Since his retirement in 1987 he has served as Interim Pastor of several churches in the Lynchburg area. He is a former pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg and was the first chaplain at Westminster Canterbury, holding that position from 1993 to 1996.
Kathleen was born in Richmond, Virginia, and grew up in southwest Louisiana. She is a graduate of St. Andrews Presbyterian College and The Presbyterian School of Christian Education. She has served as a Director of Christian Education and as an elementary school teacher in Lynchburg, Richmond, and Dunedin, Florida.
Sherwood and Kathleen were married in 1959. They have three daughters and five granddaughters. Sherwood enjoys shooting pool, being involved with the sing-a-longs and being surrounded by many of the books from his extensive theological library. Kathleen is involved as a volunteer at Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest and as a member of AAUW. She serves on the session of Westminster Presbyterian Church and is a teacher of an adult Sunday School class. She enjoys participating in two book discussion groups. Sherwood died while at Westminster Canterbury.
