Al was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he attended E.C. Glass High School. After high school, Al went to Princeton to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in English. Al then joined the US Coast Guard Reserve; he then went to The University of Virginia to get a Masters in Architectural History.
After graduating, Al and his wife moved to DC in 1969 where he took a job as an Architectural Historian for the National Park Service. Al retired in 1980 and began doing independent projects.
His wife, Bettye still lives in DC and teaches French at Georgetown University. Al enjoys gardening and reading.
