Bob, born in Rainelle WV, moved several times until his family settled in Montgomery, WV. Following graduation from Montgomery High School, he received a BA in biology at Berea College in Kentucky. He then received his M.D. degree at The University of Virginia School of Medicine (UVA). Post-graduate training included internship, residency, and fellowship in gastroenterology at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, followed by Chief Residency in Medicine at the University of Virginia Hospital.
Nancy, born and raised in Nansemond County, VA, graduated from Whaleyville High School before attending Mary Washington College and The University of Virginia School of Nursing, receiving a Bachelor in Nursing Degree. Bob and Nancy met while he was in medical school and she in nursing school, and were married in 1958. Nancy then joined Bob in NYC where she worked as a RN at The New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center, and then later at The University of Virginia Hospital.
After completion of his post-graduate training, Bob and Nancy lived at Ft. Bragg, NC where Bob worked in Womack Army Hospital for his two-year commitment as Captain with the U.S. Army. Shortly before entering the army, a son David was born, and shortly before leaving the army, daughter Susan was born.
They moved to Lynchburg, VA in 1963 where Bob joined 3 other physicians in their practice, Medical and Cardiology Associates. Bob retired from this practice (Medical Associates of Central Virginia) which had grown to over 20 doctors in 1996. Nancy worked briefly as a nurse at Virginia Baptist Hospital, and spent 22 years part-time at Westminster Canterbury Residential Clinic. Nancy served on the Board of Trustees for Westminster Canterbury for 7 years. Bob and Nancy have 2 grandchildren.
Bob has enjoyed woodworking, making many antique reproductions. He also enjoys genealogy, travelling, computer, and digital photography. Nancy enjoys cooking, gardening, Bible study, arranging flowers, travelling, and music. Both Bob & Nancy are involved members at First Presbyterian Church, and both have served as Deacons and as Elders.
