Bill was born in San Diego, California where his father was a Naval Officer. As a young child Bill and his family relocated many times, but moved to Fairfax, Virginia in 1952 where Bill graduated from high school. After high school Bill went to Virginia Tech for his Bachelors in Civil Engineering and then went into the Army for two years and returned to VT to receive his Masters in Civil Engineering. It was at VT that Bill met his late wife, Lynn. They met when the Junior League of Roanoke decided to sponsor the annual Harvest Festival; the Junior League needed a homecoming court and decided to pull ladies from Virginia’s women’s colleges to be princesses and men from VPI and UVA to be escorts. Bill and Lynn were placed together and after the weekend they started corresponding and eventually started dating. They were married in August of 1960. Together they have three boys and one granddaughter. Bill worked for Wiley & Wilson and retired in 2002. Lynn was a homemaker, but very active in the community serving Randolph College for many years. Her service included work on the Centennial Campaign, the 1986 Presidential search, the Colleges 75th and 100th anniversary committees and a Trustee from 2000-2010 where she chaired the Building and Grounds Committee. Lynn volunteered at the Maier Museum of Art as a docent for 30 years. In 2012 she received the College’s Alumnae Achievement Award. Lynn was equally as involved in volunteering with many local charities. Lynn also served on Westminster Canterbury’s Board for eight years, three as Chair. Lynn passed away in November 2012.
Bill attends St. John’s Episcopal Church. He enjoys building homes for Habitat, playing tennis, woodworking, exercising, and travelling.
