Just nine days after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, the Lockridge family of Bonnie View Farm in Raphine, Virginia welcomed the birth of a baby girl and nine baby pigs – according to the journal of Kay’s father, L.C. Lockridge.
After graduating from Longwood College with a degree in Education, Kay married Bob Goodman and moved to Lexington, Virginia, where they raised their two daughters. After being widowed at a young age, Kay began her career with the Presbyterian Church working in the areas of mission, social justice, and peacemaking. Over the course of the next twenty years, Kay served as Associate Executive Presbyter of Shenandoah Presbytery, Executive Director of the Center for Women in Christian Leadership of the theological consortium in Richmond, Virginia, and then retired from the national office of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in Louisville, Kentucky, where she served as Coordinator of Advocacy for Women.
Her career took her to fourteen countries over five continents studying women’s lives and women’s issues. One of her earliest and favorite trips took her down the Volga River as a member of a peace delegation which also included Yuri Gagarin, the first Russian cosmonaut. There was much to be learned from living in community with those who were seen at that time as “the enemy.”
Another high point was her trip to China as a delegate to the United Nation’s Fourth World Conference on the Status of Women. She was pleased to be one of roughly 50,000 women from across the globe who were working to address the challenges women face.
Kay enjoys storytelling, reading, music, and time with her family, friends, and cat, Sophia. She has two granddaughters and a grandson who are quite possibly the world’s most perfect children.
