Peggy Morris (nee Crabtree) grew up in Halifax County near Brookneal, Virginia. She held the position of first and only child for six years, but then, over the course of time, became the big sister to four brothers. She graduated from Volens High School in 1947 and the following year entered Virginia Baptist Hospital’s school of nursing.
After receiving her R. N. diploma in 1951, Peggy joined the staff at the hospital. One day, with Peggy in attendance, the brother of one of her patients arrived for a visit. It wasn’t exactly love at first sight, but shortly thereafter she and the young man, Willie Morris, M.D. (deceased 2011), regularly met and visited on the front porch at the nurses’ residency. The couple eventually married in 1953.
As the new wife to a first lieutenant in the Army, Peggy found herself in Giessen, Germany, where her husband worked in military medical services. While abroad, they traveled as much as possible and, ifpressed, Peggy might mention Sweden and Austria as her favorite countries. She will quickly add that she enjoyed all of Europe.
Once back in the States in 1958, the Morrises lived in Norfolk, Virginia, for four years before settling in Lynchburg, first in a house on Trent’s Ferry Road and later in a smaller home on Lee Jackson Highway (501N). They had two sons: Willie III ( and wife) and Steven live in Lynchburg, while five grandchildren and one great-grandchild make their homes in various communities in Virginia and New York. Naturally, it delights Peggy that they all visit frequently.
As her boys grew, Peggy became a regular golfer at Boonsboro Country Club and even scored two holes in one. She also played bridge with friends and dabbled in watercolor painting. Recently, she has been too busy preparing for her move to WC to engage in any hobbies, but once settled in her apartment she expects to return to the leisure pursuits she enjoys.
