Lois (nee Burlingame), born in Blackwell, Oklahoma and John Hansen, born in Wamego, Kansas, followed graduation from their respective high schools with college enrollment in their home states. Lois, after completing her studies at Oklahoma State University in 1958 with a major in elementary education, moved to Topeka, Kansas, to teach third grade. John, holding an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Kansas University, also in 1958, first worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone’s Topeka office. They met in a Topeka Sunday school class and married in 1959.
The couple moved to Corning, New York, where John joined the staff of Corning, Inc., the maker of many glass products. With the birth of daughter Michelle, and later adoption of son Eric, Lois decided to be a stay-at-home mom. When both children were old enough to attend school, Lois returned to the classroom and for 24 years worked with learning disabled students for the Corning Painted Post School District.
After 37 years with Corning Glass, John retired, holding the position of Optical Properties Measurement Supervisor, the Hansen’s immediately set out on a journey across the U. S., searching for a place to live in retirement. They visited Michelle in California, Eric in Lynchburg, and explored points in between, eventually deciding to settle in Sarasota, Florida, their home for the next 10 years. Thirteen months ago they moved to an independent living, CCRC facility, LAKEHOUSE WEST Retirement Estates in Sarasota, FL. Now, following their desire to live near Eric, his wife, Elizabeth, and two of their five grandchildren they are gladly trading the benefits of Florida’s warm weather and cultural amenities, for the benefits of living near family.
Lois and John enjoy the arts—theater, music, etc. In his youth, John sang and played the saxophone and clarinet. At age 15, he contracted polio, which affected his speech, swallowing, and breathing. He managed the condition very well until about six years ago when his voice became weak due to the Post Polio Syndrome. John now wears a microphone connected to a small belt worn amplifier, which he uses in a manner that puts everyone at ease. When not at his computer, John enjoys walking, exercise, and Tai Chi. Lois used to exercise regularly, but a fall two years ago in an exercise class at the YMCA injured her spine. Now healed, she continues to take daily walks, and involves herself with more sedentary interests, such as reading, adult coloring books, and activities at her church.
Before retirement, the Hansens served in various volunteer activities. Lois particularly enjoyed her time as a tour guide at the Corning Glass Center. While living at Lakehouse West in Sarasota, John has served as chairman of the Dining Room committee, one of the Residents Association committees, and captain of one of the “Pitch and Putt” Golf Teams. They both look forward to deciding which WC activities to join.
