Vermelle Lytton
Vernelle Lytton (nee Stinnett), former teacher, realtor, and banker, as well as mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, graduated from Amherst High School, Amherst, Virginia, in 1952. She immediately entered Madison College (today known as James Madison University). On a blind date arranged by a friend to a dance at Virginia Tech in 1953, Vernelle met Leon Lytton (deceased 2004), whom she married in July 1954. In the fall of that year, she returned to Madison--Leon to Tech--and upon completing her B.A. degree in 1956, moved to Dublin, Virginia, to teach. Once Leon received a Master’s Degree in Architecture, they moved to Lynchburg. They had two sons, Mike (deceased 1979) and Keith, who lives in Providence Forge, Virginia. Vernelle’s one granddaughter, Rachel, and two great-grandchildren, Nikki and Gabe, live in Forest, Virginia.
In addition to calling Amherst County and Lynchburg home, since 2001, Vernelle has spent the winter months in Sun-N-Lakes, a golf course community in Sebring, Florida. She refers to golf, and her time on the course there and at Boonsboro Country Club, as a recreational addiction.
Although she modestly admits to having shot her age a time or two, golf has not been the only focus in her life. Vernelle belongs to the Oakwood Garden Club and offers strong praise for the League of Women Voters for giving her a venue for meeting interesting women who want to make a difference. She also values supporting community organizations with missions to improve the quality of life for some of the city’s residents. Over the years Vernelle has given volunteer time--and plans to continue to do so-- to two such charities: Daily Bread and Meals on Wheels.
Once settled at Westminster Canterbury, Vernelle plans to continue pursuing interests in reading and bridge, along with various activities at Peakland United Methodist Church, her charity volunteer hours, and of course, golf.
