Joyce (nee Westendorf) Lloyd readily confesses that her move to Westminster Canterbury has been 100% backwards. It happened this way. A fall and a broken hip brought her to WC for physical therapy services, which led to hospitalization for hip replacement surgery, followed, of course, by a return to WC--first on the 6th floor for rehabilitation, and then a move to assisted living. This highly satisfactory and successful journey now concludes with Joyce establishing a new home in an independent living apartment.
A resident of Lynchburg since 1978, Joyce grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she graduated from Mt. Healthy High School. After attending Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, for two years, she returned to Cincinnati and worked for four years as a secretary. With marriage, (since divorced), Joyce initially devoted her time to raising two sons and a daughter. Matt, wife Kris, and three children live in Lynchburg; Eric, wife Elizabeth, and their three children reside in Charlotte, NC. Rachel and husband Michael have two children and call Richmond home. Proud that all of her children graduated from the University of Virginia, Joyce’s license plate reads: “My Three Hoos.”
Various job transfers for Joyce’s husband brought about frequent moves for the family. After Cincinnati the couple lived in Portsmouth, Ohio, before they traveled with their two sons to Florence, Italy. There, Joyce became moderately fluent in Italian and made life-long friends. After five years in Italy, the Lloyds returned to the United States, first making their home in Vermont before settling in Lynchburg.
Once residents in the Hill City, and her children requiring less of her time, Joyce worked part-time in retail for six years. She then moved to regular employment, first with Meriwether Market Restaurant and eventually with Meriwether Godsey Corporation. After a total of 18 years with these two businesses, she retired in 2010.
Not one to stay idle, Joyce soon became a volunteer at the Pearson Cancer Center. Willing to do anything and everything, she calls herself their “Girl Friday.” Her favorite leisure activity is fishing, especially when one or more of her eight grandchildren accompany her. Joyce also enjoys playing card games, especially Bridge and Hand and Foot. She is a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and Oakwood Country Club.
