C.L. Carwile, a native of Charlotte County, Virginia, and Nancy (nee Ramsey), originally from North Carolina, became high school sweethearts while attending Charlotte County’s Randolph-Henry High School. After graduating, C. L. earned an associate degree from Phillips Business College; Nancy enrolled at the College of William and Mary, receiving a BA degree in 1963. C.L. and Nancy married that year and settled in Charlotte County where C. L. operated a dairy and beef cattle farm, in partnership, first with his father, and later a brother, and served in the Army National Guard.
The Carwiles have two children: Son Andy and wife Sonya live in Charlotte Court House, Virginia, and daughter Lona Klein and husband Christian reside in Falls Church, Virginia. They also proudly claim seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
For 40 years, Nancy pursued a career in education with experiences in three areas. She first worked as an elementary school teacher for 27 years and during that time earned a masters degree in reading from the University of Virginia. In 1990, she completed the UVA requirements for a PhD and began nine years as administrative faculty at Southside Virginia Community College. Before retiring in 2001, Nancy served for four years as the Director of the Southside Virginia Governors School.
As an active farmer and conservationist, C.L. was elected to the local Farm Services Administration and the District Soil and Water Committee. He has been a leader in forage improvement and livestock Best Management Practices.
In concert with her career, Nancy has also been an involved citizen of both the Commonwealth of Virginia and Charlotte County. She received appointments from past governors to the Southside Virginia Business and Education Commission and the Virginia Board for Correctional Education. With a strong interest in adult literacy she has been a longtime volunteer and board member at the Charlotte County Adult Learning Center. On December 31, 2019, she will complete 16 years of elected membership on the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors.
Both C. L. and Nancy enjoy music; he particularly likes bluegrass and over the years the couple has demonstrated their skills on the dance floor. Nancy has served as the pianist for their church, taught Sunday School, belongs to a book group and two bridge clubs.
