Peter Dunlop, born in Hengelo, Holland, moved with his mother to Castlegar, British Columbia, Canada, in 1946. He graduated from the town’s Stanley Humphries Secondary School and in 1964 earned a B. S. degree in engineering from the University of British Columbia. Wanting to continue with his studies, he immediately entered the University of California at Berkley where, in 1967, he received both masters and doctoral degrees, also in engineering.
Over the next 41 years Peter pursued a career in civil engineering. For most of those years he worked for Stone and Webster, with job transfers that took the Dunlop family to homes in a number of East Coast communities including Long Island and Huntington, New York; Boston; and Princeton Junction and other New Jersey towns. Peter’s hobbies include woodworking, reading, and walking. Since the Dunlop’s move in 2008 to Heathsville, Virginia, Peter has served as a volunteer at the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum in Reedville.
In 1957, Diane (nee Warner) Dunlop, born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, graduated from Nanaimo District Secondary School. She entered the University of British Columbia and frequently told her brother’s friend, Jack, also students at the university, that her hope was to meet an eligible man who stood taller than her six feet, two inches. As luck would have it, she met Peter, a good four inches taller. The two married in 1964.
Once settled in California, Diane was employed for a couple of years in a stockbroker’s office, assisting with payroll and paying bills. With the arrival of children, she changed her work to that of childcare and household management. Daughter Major General Dawn Dunlop resides in Washington, D. C., and son Dr. Michael Dunlop, wife, Sarah, and their three sons, live in Lynchburg, Virginia.
In 1977, now living and working on Long Island, New York, Diane enrolled at Empire State College where three years later she received a B. S. degree with a major in Biology. In 1981, she started what became 27 years with Citibank. She steadily advanced in her career and retired in 2008, holding the position of Administration Manager. In Heathsville, Diane volunteered with her Homeowner’s Association and belonged to a garden club in nearby Kilmarnock. Like Peter, she enjoys reading and walking, and also plays cards and sews.
