Nancy (nee Burch) and James (Jim) Hunter’s arrival at Westminster Canterbury marks their sixth move as a couple. Nancy grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, while Jim, born in Richlands, Virginia, lived in various communities across the Commonwealth because his father’s job involved frequent relocations. After completing high school both continued their educations—Nancy earned a B. A. degree in biology from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and Jim a B. A. degree in English from the University of Virginia. From college, she went to work as a clinical bacteriologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where in 1956 she met Jim, a student at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. They married June 21, 1958.
In the summer of 1959, two significant events occurred for the Hunters. Jim, having received his medical degree, began a four-year internship and residency at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, and on the fourth of July the first of five children was born. A few years later, their only daughter arrived on Christmas day. How many families can say that two children were born on holidays?
Today, Jimmy, the fourth of July baby, and wife Mary Beth live in Forest; daughter Ann McLean and husband Andy reside in Richmond, Virginia, as does the Hunter’s fourth child, John and wife Lisa. Billy, the third child to join the Hunter family calls Charlottesville home. David, child number five and his wife, Dr. Lilly Hunter, live in Baltimore, Maryland, six blocks from where Nancy grew up. Jim and Nancy have 13 grandchildren with one, Mary Blair, Ann’s youngest, a rising senior honor student and star soccer player at Virginia Episcopal School.
Jim, upon completion of his residency at the UVa Hospital, served in the United States Navy, working for two years in Portsmouth, Virginia, at the Naval Hospital. From there the couple moved to Waynesboro, Virginia, in 1965, where Jim joined an internal medicine practice. The family relocated again in 1968, this time returning to Charlottesville for Jim to enroll in a three-year radiology residency. Upon completion, he remained at UVa for another three years as a member on the radiology staff. The Hunter family then settled in Lynchburg when Jim joined Radiology Consultants, where he remained until his retirement in November 1996.
Along with managing a busy household, Nancy gave many hours, extending into years of her time, as a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. She is a member of the James River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as the chapter’s regent from 1989 to 1992, and for many years was on the committee planning Lynchburg’s Wreaths Across America event. She belongs to the Ragged Robin Garden Club, where she presided as president in 1985.
Nancy and Jim belong to Trinity Episcopal Church (Boonsboro) and to Boonsboro Country Club where they once spent enjoyable times on the links. Jim is a member of the Men’s Central Virginia Horticultural Society and likes to read and play bridge.
