Linda Miles (nee Patchen) grew up in Towson, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore. She graduated from Towson High School and enrolled at the University of Maryland. In 1968 she earned a B. S. degree with a major in physical therapy. Linda married her high school sweetheart and spent the next year as a physical therapist with the Untied States Public Health Service. A relocation to Blacksburg, Virginia, found Linda employed by the Veterans Administration in Salem.
One year later the couple moved to Lynchburg and she initially worked at Danville Memorial Hospital. With the arrival of children, Linda became a full-time mother and occasionally provided fill-in assistance at Lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist Hospitals. In 1979, she returned to work outside her home and became the first physical therapist hired by the Lynchburg Public Schools assigned to the system’s special education program. Ten years later she left this position to do contractual work for local rehabilitation agencies, including services at Westminster Canterbury. In 1994, she received a Certificate in Gerontology from Lynchburg College, today the University of Lynchburg, and in 1999 accepted a position as a physical therapist at Central Virginia Training Center. She officially retired in 2011, but continued on a part-time basis until 2016.
Linda has four children. Son Scott (wife Katherine) lives in Philadelphia; Chris (wife Jill) in Port St. Lucie, Florida. A third son, Peter, resides in Lynchburg and daughter, Cindy Stansberry (husband Daniel) in Griffin, Georgia. She has seven grandchildren.
Interests and hobbies are as varied as her past employment positions. She has benefited from membership at the YMCA for 20 years, enjoys spending time understanding the newest developments around electronic devices, and frequently has her camera in hand, photographing a variety of subjects. She belongs to Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church and through the years has held leadership roles in various nonprofit and Christian organizations.
