Martha Vermilya, a native of Richlands, Virginia, graduated from Richlands High School in 1958. She attended Southern Seminary in Buena Vista, Virginia, for one year before enrolling in Lynchburg College (today University of Lynchburg). In 1963, after completing studies for a B. A. degree in history and sociology she settled in Richmond, Virginia.
One year later Martha received a secretarial certificate from the Pan American Secretarial School and for four years handled secretarial responsibilities at the Clinical Research Center at the Medical College of Virginia. She moved to Syracuse, New York, and for 18 months worked as secretary to the director of the Clinical Research Center at the Syracuse Upstate Medical Center.
She returned to Richmond and in 1973, accepted the position of secretary at MCV’s Department of Medicine, Gastroenterology Division. At the time of her retirement in 1998, she held the position of Assistant to the Chairman.
As a resident of Richmond, Martha was an active member of Westhampton United Methodist Church and a busy volunteer with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League and the Tri-Club Woman’s Club. Since retiring she has enjoyed traveling and recalls a cruise through the Panama Canal as particularly memorable.
Martha is pleased to be moving to Westminster Canterbury for two reasons.
Over the years, she has held a favorable impression of WC from her mother’s residency from 1999 to 2007. She is also excited about living in the same community as her brother George and his wife Dea.
