Mina and Robert (Robin) Wood
How many high school sweethearts marry and 55 years later, still happily married, move to Westminster Canterbury? Meet Mina (nee Walker) and Robin Wood, Lynchburg natives, who met in the halls of E. C. Glass High School and were a steady couple when they graduated in 1958. Still dating, both pursued educational goals with Mina at Sweet Briar College where she graduated in 1962 with a B. A. degree in American Studies, while Robin attended Washington and Lee College earning a B. A. degree in European history that same year.
Continuing with educational pursuits, Mina received a secretarial certificate from Radcliffe School in 1962 and with skills learned there landed a public relations position at the University of Virginia in the office of Information Services (1963-1965). Some years later she completed a correspondence course in landscape design and for 12 years worked on both residential and business landscape design projects.
Mina has several interests—reading, playing bridge, and gardening. She is a member of the Lynchburg Garden Club and served as its president in the late 1980s. For the years 2000-2002, Mina held the position of president of the Garden Club of Virginia.
Robin received a law degree from the University of Virginia (1965). He worked for two years in Richmond at the firm of Mays, Valentine, Davenport and Moore before returning to Lynchburg in 1967 to join Edmunds & Williams (2016 merged with Woods, Rogers). In addition to practicing law, Robin has taught law courses at Washington and Lee since 1980.
Reading and sports are high on his list of leisure activities. Interest in football started with his years of playing both at E. C. Glass High School and Washington and Lee and led to his working for 35 years as a referee for football’s Atlantic Coast Conference. As a member and president of the board, of the YMCA, Robin oversaw the capital campaign that resulted in the building of the Jamerson YMCA. He belongs to the Lynchburg Bar Association and has been a volunteer for their Rule of Law program taught to student’s in Lynchburg’s three middle schools. He has received recognition from the Bar and the Virginia Legal Aid Foundation for his many community service efforts.
Mina and Robin married in 1963 and have three sons; all reside in Lynchburg. Sackett and wife Alex have three sons, Bunny and wife Anne have two sons and one daughter, and Marshall and wife Mary Catherine have one son. Both Mina and Robin enjoy following the activities of their seven grandchildren.
