Mary Ann (nee Maddox), born in Campbell County, Virginia, and Art Clark from Exter, New Hampshire, married in 1974 and have moved to Westminster Canterbury from their Lynchburg home on Heronhill Place. At the time of their marriage Mary Ann was an elementary school teacher with the Lynchburg City schools and Art was well into his career as an engineer with General Electric.
As a 1951 graduate of Naruna High School, Mary Ann entered Longwood College (today Longwood University) and four years later received a B. A. degree with a major in elementary education. After two years of teaching in Lynchburg, she secured employment as a teacher in schools on United States military bases in Europe, first in Germany for one year and then for a year in France. She returned to Lynchburg again teaching in Lynchburg schools. In 1969, Mary Ann completed the requirements for a master’s degree in elementary teaching from the University of Virginia. Mary Ann retired from her career in the early 1990s.
Art’s studies for becoming an engineer includes a B. S. degree in that field from the University of New Hampshire (1959), a master’s degree in business administration from Lynchburg College and a degree in engineering from George Washington University. His affiliation with General Electric began as an apprentice during his time at the University of New Hampshire. He came to the Lynchburg plant shortly after it opened in the late 1950s and he retired in 1994. Art has two daughters: Melanie Aschenbrenner and her husband Van live in Nebraska and Belinda Scamporino and husband Steve reside in New Hampshire. He also has one grandchild and three great grandchildren.
Mary Ann and Art enjoy reading, both fiction and nonfiction and Art is a fan of Sudoku. Once retired they traveled to many interesting places and list France and Italy as their favorites.
