Residents of Lynchburg since 1977, Beth grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, and Wayne in Richmond where they met on a blind date in 1969 and married one year later. At the time, Beth had graduated from Mary Washington College as a history major. Wayne, with a chemistry degree from the University of Richmond, was enrolled in dental school at Virginia Commonwealth University. Following dental school, he served for two years as a lieutenant in the United States Navy with assignments in Georgia and Texas.
In 1975, Wayne received an honorable discharge and the Colemans returned to Richmond where he began a two-year periodontal residency program at the Medical College of Virginia. During their previous residency in Richmond, Beth had been employed by Equitable Life Insurance Company and the Commonwealth of Virginia Girl Scout Council. Upon their return, she worked as full-time manager of the Coleman household and mother to two children. Today, son John and wife Liz have two children and live in Midlothian, Virginia. Beth and Wayne’s daughter, Christy Kirk, husband Dave and their four children reside in Sudbury, Massachusetts.
Once the children were in school Beth established a career outside the home on several fronts. She assisted with various financial duties for Wayne T. Coleman, D.D.S. Inc., received an MBA from Lynchburg College (today the University of Lynchburg) in 1991, and taught at the Miller Motte Business College. From experience assisting individuals with tax returns at H & R Block and AARP Taxaide, Beth worked for ten years as a volunteer with AARP’s tax return assistance program. Beth also served on the board of the Miller Home for Girls for 10 years, holding the offices of President and Vice President during that time. Today, she is a member of the finance committee at Peakland Methodist Church, the Coleman’s church, and performs its annual audit.
Wayne retired from his periodontist practice in 2005 giving him more time to pursue his interest in athletic activities which include running, biking, snow skiing, and water sports. Beth’s hobbies are reading, bridge, and walking. They both like to travel and have many stories to tell about their sojourns in the United States, Canada, Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand.
