During her junior year in high school, Judy Early moved with her family from Chickasha, Oklahoma, to Oklahoma City. Little did she know that in 2020, a change of address from Forest, Virginia, to Westminster Canterbury Lynchburg would be number 26 for her. Because of that first move and enrollment at Classen High School, Judy met her husband-to-be, John George (retired Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army, deceased 2018).
Shortly after Judy graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a major in physical education, she and John married in the Cadet Chapel at West Point Military Academy. In addition to the traditional white wedding dress, Judy wore a plaster of paris cast from foot to knee because of her right ankle, broken three weeks earlier when she held the quarterback position on her sorority’s football team. Despite Judy’s bad luck, the Pi Beta Phi’s went on to win the game, a charity event to raise money for cerebral palsy.
She describes her childhood days as a time of being a “tomboy” first playing softball followed by baseball and some tennis. When in the sixth grade, she won her first competitive singles match, just the motivation she needed to make tennis her game. For 25 years Judy worked as a teaching tennis pro offering lessons at various tennis facilities and clubs as she traveled with her husband from military assignment to military assignment. With John’s retirement in 1980, the Georges moved to West Point, New York, where John ministered to cadets through Officer’s Christian Fellowship (OCF). Ten years later they arrived in Lynchburg, John to be a business professor at Liberty University.
Judy has two children, six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Son Jeff lives in Lynchburg and daughter Jenna and husband David reside in Alexandria, Virginia. Two years ago, still with a strong sense of adventure, Judy joined grandson Levi for a skydiving experience. She will tell you that it was great fun but now she is ready to keep her feet on the ground. With that said, she is looking forward to participating in Pickleball games at WC.
When not engaged in playing a sport Judy enjoys watching football games and Liberty University women’s basketball. She also regularly draws house plans and has had great fun designing her WC apartment. Reading is a favorite leisure activity, but best of all is time spent with family and friends.
