Some might call Mary Ann Lacy a pro when it comes to moving. Over the course of her marriage to Lyle Lacy (deceased 2010), who worked as a city manager, the Lacy family lived in Richmond, Virginia; Fort Worth, Texas; Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Marietta, Georgia; Alliance, Nebraska; Front Royal, Virginia; and Danville, Virginia. She arrived in Lynchburg in 2011.
Mary Ann and Lyle grew up in South Hill, Virginia, and met when attending the same elementary school. She graduated from South Hill’s Park View High School and in 1969, earned a B. A. degree in English from North Carolina Wesleyan University. Two months later she and Lyle married. Mary Ann has two children, three grandchildren, and two grand-dogs. Daughter Laura Hamilton and husband Tim live in Lynchburg and son Matt and wife Kristen reside in Richmond.
When in Richmond, Mary Ann taught elementary school. With the move to Texas she left education and held entry level jobs, first at a bank and then at an advertising agency. During the early years of the lives of her children, Mary Ann concentrated on being a mother and homemaker. When she returned to the world of work outside the home, she was briefly employed by FEMA before she found her niche, first as a volunteer, and then an employee, with adult literacy programs. She has served as tutor and trainer of tutors, and at retirement in 2011 held the position of executive director for Project Literacy, a program of the Danville City Schools Adult Education Program.
For fun Mary Ann reads, mainly fiction, and enjoys membership in book clubs. She is especially proud of her work on the Little Free Library Projects. She also likes to travel and is always ready to pack a suitcase and embark on a new adventure. She is a volunteer at Daily Bread and as a member of Peakland United Methodist Church has actively assisted with numerous church projects.
