Laura (nee Keaton) and Paul Morrison, natives of Lynchburg, met as first graders at Holy Cross Academy. Initially, a case of “puppy love” evolved into steady dating during high school and college and marriage in 1970. At that time, Paul had graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a B. S. in marketing education. He has remained loyal to his alma mater and just completed a 10 year term on its Alumni Advisory Board. Laura had completed two years at Radford College and worked for two years at First and Merchants Bank in Lynchburg.
The Morrisons established their first home in Fairfax County, Virginia, where Paul taught at Groveton High School. While there, daughter Sarah was born. Today she, her husband Dick, and their three children live in Madison, Mississippi. The Morrisons returned to Blacksburg and VPI in 1972, and one year later Paul received a M. S. degree in education.
A job for Paul with Central Virginia Community College brought the Morrisons back to Lynchburg in 1973. Soon son Paul, who resides in New York City, joined the family. For the next few years, before returning to the “work world”, Laura devoted her time to managing their home and raising the children.
From 1978 until 1988, Laura worked at Lynchburg General Hospital as assistant staffing coordinator. She also returned to school to complete her college studies--first taking courses at Central Virginia Community College and then enrolling at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College (today Randolph College) where in 1986 she received a B. A. degree in economics.
Upon graduation, Laura accepted a position at R-MWC in the Development Department and over the next 21 years she held various positions culminating in serving as Director of Research. Retirement in 2007 did not mean that Laura stopped working. First, for two years she was with the Lynchburg City Schools as a substitute teacher and teacher assistant and, in 2015, she worked for a few months for Morgan Stanley.
Paul, during his 43 years at CVCC, taught business management courses and held the positions of assistant director of continuing adult education and community service, assistant and associate professor of business management, and program coordinator for business management. In his spare time, he worked with local businesses, such as Meredith-Burda Corporation (now R. R. Donnelley) (1978-1984), as a training assistant and customer service representative. Paul also served as Co-Director at Region 2000’s Small Business Development Center from 2007 to 2013.
Both Laura and Paul, when working and in retirement, actively follow college sports, especially the happenings in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). As members of WC’s Canterbury Club, they have frequently taken WC’s day trips and have joined the Soulmates Walking Club on its excursions. Laura also enjoys drawing and watercolor painting, while Paul is an avid bird watcher.
