It started at a Duke University and University of North Carolina at Greensboro mixer. Bill and Caroline met, started dating, and married in 1968. At the time, Caroline had graduated from UNC-G and Bill, with an undergraduate degree from Duke, was in medical school at the Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond, Virginia.
While Bill worked on his M.D. Caroline was employed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a disability determination specialist. She describes the experience as one of getting her PHT -- “Putting Hubby Through”.
With Bill’s graduation from MCV, the Crows moved to Roanoke, Virginia, where he completed a three-year Family Medicine Residency program at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. They then moved to North Carolina with Bill fulfilling a two-year commitment with the United States Army. The Crow family now included two children. Today, daughter Katie Earnhart and husband Chris live in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Their son, William, resides in Pipersville, Pennsylvania. Bill and Caroline have two grandchildren.
The Crow family moved from North Carolina back to Virginia in 1976 with Bill working as a “country doc” in Fincastle. House calls, writing prescriptions in church and sewing up wounds after hours were the norm for his practice. In 1995, they moved to Lynchburg as Bill had accepted a faculty position with Centra’s Family Medicine Residency program. During the course of this tenure, he received the program’s annual Spirit of Family Medicine Award five times. He retired in 2010 but enjoyed the teaching experience too much to give it completely up and soon agreed to work part-time with the Residency Program, a position that he still holds today.
After leaving Richmond, Virginia, Caroline’s career involved a variety of work experiences including substitute teaching, preschool teacher, nursing home admissions director, hospice social worker, and college book-store employee. During her children’s growing years Caroline served as an avid supporter of their interests and activities and over the years has involved herself in volunteer work through her church and community organizations.
Both Bill and Caroline enjoy walking, YMCA activities, reading, music and visiting their children, grandchildren, grand dogs, and grand cats.
