Judy Schulz, born in Marion, Virginia, has been a resident of Lynchburg for 47 years. Her first exposure to the Hill City was as a student majoring in music at Sweet Briar College. She graduated in 1961, and two weeks later married the Reverend Steve Schulz (deceased 2021), also from Marion.
Their first home was in Maryville, Tennessee, where Steve served two near-by, small churches, Judy gave private piano lessons, and their first child Cecily Banks was born. Cecily now lives in Warren, Rhode Island. With a new church assignment for Steve in Fairfax, Virginia, the Schulz’s moved, Judy started a private piano studio, and earned a Master of Arts degree in musicology from American University. A second child, Garth Schulz, was born. Garth, and his wife Karen, reside in Rye, New York. Judy has five adult grandchildren.
The Schulz family moved to Lynchburg in 1974, for Steve to serve as the minister for Trinity Lutheran Church for 26 years. Judy, in addition to establishing a private piano studio, taught at Sweet Briar College and Lynchburg College (today University of Lynchburg).
Music has always provided Judy a means for a career and a hobby. Today, she enjoys listening to music, continues to offer private piano lessons and teaches at Sweet Briar College. She also enjoys reading, followed by discussions with her book club members. Over the years, Judy has been (and still is) an active member of the League of Women voters. She has also provided volunteer work to several not-for-profit organizations including time at Poplar Forest and serving as choir director at Trinity Lutheran Church.
