Daryl Yoder, from Springfield, Ohio, and Wanda Phillips, born and raised in Anderson, Indiana, enrolled in 1965, at Anderson College (today Anderson University), located in Anderson, Indiana. Each had an older sister in attendance at the college. The two women became friends and noted that they each had younger siblings the same age. They introduced Daryl and Wanda to each other in the summer of 1965. They became good friends for several years before marrying in January of 1969.
Following graduation from Anderson, the Yoders moved several times, each one to accommodate Daryl’s educational pursuits of medical school, internships, and residency. With two children as a part of their family, the Yoders made a permanent move to Lynchburg in 1978, where Daryl established a private practice in general psychiatry. In December 2013, after 35 years, he retired from his practice. Not ready to completely stop working, Daryl next provided psychiatric assistance for one and one-half years at Lynchburg’s Veterans’ Administration office, thus achieving a second retirement in 2015.
During their first years in Lynchburg, Wanda taught elementary school students at James River Day School and in 1985 changed from her role as a teacher to that of a student with enrollment at Washington and Lee Law School. She completed the required studies in 1988, and practiced law in Lynchburg until retirement in 2021.
Daryl obtained a private pilot’s license while in medical school and later earned additional ratings for commercial, multi-engine, instrument, and seaplane operations. It did not take long for the entire family to grow fond of traveling, especially when it included flying in a private plane with Daryl as pilot. In addition to frequent trips to Indiana and Ohio to visit relatives, the Yoders have flown to Canada, the Bahamas, and 26 of the United States to vacation and explore places of interest, especially national parks. Daryl’s retirement from flying did not bring an end to Yoder travels. Today he is behind the wheel of a recreational vehicle.
The Yoder’s daughter, Liane McCready (husband Jason) lives in Lynchburg and their son Stephen (wife Jennifer) resides in Henrico, Virginia. The Yoders have seven grandchildren and many grand pets.
