Born in West Chester, PA, Bill grew up in western Pennsylvania near Somerset. After one year at W&J (Washington & Jefferson College), Bill transferred to American University in Washington, DC, to continue his major in German, minor in history and where he met Mary Ann as they both worked in the Admissions Office. They didn’t start to date until after Bill graduated in 1967 but marriage wasn’t far away. While still living in DC, they had their first child, Kristin Booz Dabney. Bill started a 33-year long teaching career in Fairfax County Public Schools, first as a German teacher (17 years) then as a trainer of teachers and support staff in instructional technology. In the interim, Mary Ann and Bill moved to Manassas, where Hendrick Booz joined the family, and then to Fairfax. Before retirement in 1999, Bill launched the first web server for the school system then, in retirement, transitioned to positions in the Schools of Education at George Washington University and UVa as an instructional designer with a focus on getting faculty to use technology.
Mary Ann (née Carscadden) was born in Washington, DC, in June 1944 and grew up in the Virginia suburbs of Arlington and Fairfax where she lived and worked until 2002 when she and Bill moved to Lynchburg to be near their daughter Kristin and her family. While in northern Virginia, Mary Ann worked at American Medical Laboratories (AML) in the Personnel Department. After 16 years, she left AML and joined Atlantic Coast Mortgage Company as Director of Personnel. After several buyouts and name changes, Mary Ann retired from First Horizon Mortgage in 2002 as Senior Vice President, Employees First.
Kristin and Lewis’ daughters, Caroline (23) and Anna Katherine (21), infants when the Boozes moved to Lynchburg 20 years ago, are now launched. Hendrick and Kelly Booz live in Alexandria and have two children, Madeline (9) and William (6).
Mary Ann is looking forward to tending her new garden spot (#30) and Bill, a lifelong learner and teacher, looks forward to sharing his understanding of technology (especially Apple branded), photography, sketching, and watercolor painting (both traditional and digital). Mary Ann and Bill have enjoyed their twenty (20) years in Lynchburg and now are so looking forward to their next adventures as they retire to their cruise ship on land, the USS Westminster Canterbury.
