Hailing from eastern North Carolina, Mary T. Carraway, was born in Wilmington and spent the majority of her adult years in Greenville. She attended East Carolina University and majored in Education. She went on to teach special needs children, ages 5-16, before starting a career with UPS. After 25 years, she retired and moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC to be close to her daughter’s family: Kim and Brad Robertson & grandsons, Leighton and Taylor. She enjoyed building sand castles, searching for sand dollars on Isles of Palms and swimming, crawling around and exploring tidal pools with her grandsons. When they moved to Lynchburg (Where Brad grew up. Yes, Kitty Robertson, another WMC resident, is his mother.), Mary relocated to Lynchburg within a year.
Mary loves animals with a particular fondness for dogs and birds. She currently has two small dogs, Blue and Beckett. She loves them dearly and is thankful her youngest daughter, Karyn, and her fiancé, Keith, of Chocowinity, NC, are adopting her dogs.
Current events and Royal Family history are of particular interest to Mary. On her initial tour of WMC, she commented, “I can’t wait to get to the Westminster library every day to read all the newspapers.” Yes, you can read news online, but Mary enjoys the feel of the newspaper in her hands and the certainty of being able to return to an article (unlike the phone which seems to have a mind of its own)!
Mary was an excellent southern cook. She whipped up the most delectable buttermilk cheese biscuits, fried chicken, country style steak and gravy… ok, you get the picture. She gladly hung up her apron a few years ago but is still asked to bring her deviled eggs and banana pudding to family gatherings. Fortunately, she passed on her love for cooking and her recipes to both her daughters.
Ready to begin a new adventure, Mary is excited and definitely a wee bit nervous about spending her golden years at Westminster.
