Bill Hanlin grew up in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, a small town near Pittsburgh, where two of his contemporaries were Arnold Palmer, son of the local golf pro, and Fred Rogers, who would become Mister Rogers. After Bill graduated from Penn State with a degree in Business Administration and Finance, he moved to New York City. His application to enter the U.S. Navy’s Officer Candidate School during the Korean War had ended at the recruiting office in Pittsburgh, where he learned that he was colorblind. His years in New York featured a daily commute on the subway between his midtown apartment and Wall Street while wedged into a closely packed rush hour crowd. After Bill relocated to Fort Lauderdale in south Florida, he played a lot of tennis, and he remembers watching pro instructor Jimmy Evert and his very young daughter, Chris, already learning her game.
When he retired, Bill moved to Bedford, Virginia, where he met and married Kathryn Wingfield. All five of Kathryn’s brothers became pastors, and she taught religion classes to school children as well. The Hanlins are supporters of Liberty University and also members of Thomas Road Baptist Church, where Bill sang in the Senior Life Choir. Since Kathryn’s death four years ago in December 2018, Bill has remained in Lynchburg, where his stepdaughter lives. Now settling in at his top-floor Creekside residence, he will be a welcome member of his new community at Westminster Canterbury. When you see him, tell him how glad we are to be his neighbors.
