Born and reared in Tucson, Arizona, Margaret headed East after graduating from the University of Arizona. She did not stray far from the academic world when she entered the University of Pennsylvania graduate school in Educational Psychology. Upon graduation, Margaret taught at the University of New Hampshire. Then, an abrupt turn in direction, led her to business school at the Sloan School of Management at MIT. As her late husband, W. Starke Mundy would say when she could not find her keys, “Margaret, you are educated beyond your ability.” How true.
Margaret relocated to Lynchburg to work for General Electric. With three years experience in sales, she moved to management positions as she continued in the mobile communications business for 31 years through 7 corporate owners —- GE, Ericsson GE, Ericsson, ComNet Ericsson, Tyco International M/A-COM, Tyco Electronics and finally, Harris Corporation. Whew! All in Lynchburg.
Having moved many times, meeting Starke on a blind date anchored Margaret to the Lynchburg-area community. Her stepdaughter, Jennifer, husband RJ, and their children Reinhard, Starke, and Max, live in Bethlehem, PA. A sister and her husband reside in Pinetop, AZ. The Mundy family includes Peggy Mosby, a resident of Westminster Canterbury, BK Mundy of Lynchburg, John Mundy of Greensboro, NC, and Elizabeth Mundy of Ashland, VA. The extended family spans the United States, from San Diego and Seattle, Phoenix, and Las Vegas, to Boston and North Carolina.
In retirement, volunteer activities with the Hill City Master Gardener Association has kept Margaret with her hands in the dirt at the Davis Instructional Garden at nearby HumanKind. She has been a volunteer instructor in the Hunter Education Program for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.
Margaret and Starke took four trips to Africa for hunting and sightseeing in Namibia, a favorite destination, and South Africa. Hobby photography keeps her challenged, learning how to get the most out of digital images. She recalls how one could take a photo, send it to be developed and hope it was “ok.” Now the photographer “owns” the product from shutter release to printing. Much more artistic control but challenging as well.
Starke and Margaret, as a couple, lived in Amherst, Virginia for 31 years, Starke longer. Margaret moved to Lynchburg in October 2021, getting a head start on downsizing for her Riverside apartment.
