Ashby & Mary Ellen Sydnor

Ashby Sydnor has lived in Lynchburg since he was four months old. He attended E.C. Glass High School and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1964. He then spent two years on active duty as a U.S. Army officer, including 13 months in South Korea. Mary Ellen was born in Sparta, Virginia, attending Caroline High School before coming to the Virginia Baptist School of Nursing in Lynchburg. It was here she met Ashby, and after her graduation in 1966 they were married and began their life in Lynchburg.  

Ashby worked at Central Fidelity Bank for 25 years and then for Century 21 Real Estate. Mary Ellen worked part time then full time at Virginia Baptist Hospital before transferring to Lynchburg General as part of the Progressive Cardio Care unit. The Sydnors have two children, Ashby, Jr., and Mary Beth McCall, and five beautiful grandchildren. They have enjoyed many trips abroad and here in the U.S. With their family they have enjoyed cruises and vacations at the beach, and they still enjoy spending the month of February at Myrtle Beach.

Ashby’s parents were one of the first couples to move to Westminster Canterbury. His mother lived to be 92 and received wonderful care here, so they knew this was where they wanted to be in their retirement years.
