Joan Tice, born and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia, graduated from E. C. Glass High School and earned a B.A. degree with a major in English at Longwood College (now Longwood University). She then taught English at E. C. Glass for 36 years, a career she found both rewarding and challenging, for example, the interaction with her students and the creative outlet it provided in making literature, especially English literature (think Shakespeare), relevant to her students. She had a special affinity for students who lacked a rich educational background and whose struggles were often overlooked in the classroom.
In 1978, Joan earned a MEd with a specialty in Reading from Lynchburg College (now University of Lynchburg). In addition to teaching, she helped with the development and implementation of a Developmental Reading elective at E. C. Glass and served for several years as English Department chair.
Retirement allowed Joan to mark off the places on her “bucket list” that she had always longed to see and to visit sites that represent a wealth of cultural and historic events. She will readily share these experiences with others, especially her walks on glaciers and a lava field, listening to the Mormon Tabernacle choir, and enjoying Claude Monet’s home and gardens.
Reading has been, and continues to be, one of Joan’s greatest joys. A day without reading is like a day without chocolate, another of her great loves. She enjoys turning her travel photos into scrapbooks, attending plays and concerts of all kinds of music, and when she needs a little stress relief with mindless activity, playing computer games on her tablet.
Joan loves animals, wild as well as domestic, and is especially fond of cats. She brings with her to Westminster Canterbury, four-year-old MollyBee, her current furry companion. Adopted from the Lynchburg Humane Society a year ago MollyBee is living up to her name as she is definitely “Queen Bee” of the Tice household.
Joan is looking forward to living at Westminster Canterbury. She expects to meet many interesting people and making new friends. She plans to increase her time pursuing activities she enjoys and finding new ones to keep her busy and involved in life. When you meet Joan ask for a story about a meaningful travel experience or about one of her previous feline companions.
