Mary Jane and Bill Hobbs
Over the course of their lives, both Mary Jane and Bill Hobbs have lived in several United States communities. Mary Jane, born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, lived in Hawaii and Richmond, Virginia, before attending Stratford College in Danville, Virginia. After one year at Stratford, she moved to New York City and enrolled at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1964 and returned to Richmond to become the head nurse on The Burn Unit at the Medical College of Virginia.
Bill, born in Cleveland, Ohio, also resided in Rye, New York, before living in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he graduated from the University of Virginia. From there he moved to Richmond and in 1968 completed medical studies at the Medical College of Virginia.
Mary Jane and Bill married in July 1969, a few months before Bill entered military service. The couple resided briefly in Pensacola, Florida, where Bill trained as a U. S. Navy flight surgeon. They then relocated to Cherry Point, North Carolina, for the rest of his tour of duty with an F-4 training squadron. Daughter Anne, who now resides in Charlotte, NC, was born during the Cherry Point days.
An ophthalmology residency for Bill took the family to Columbus, Ohio, for three years where son Will, who lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, joined the family. In June 1975, upon completion of Bill’s residency, the Hobbs family decided to make Lynchburg, Virginia, home with Bill joining the practice of Frank I. Hobbs and Robert A. Whisnant, Jr., later to become Lynchburg Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
For ten years, following retirement in 2008, Bill volunteered his services monthly at the Free Clinic of Central Virginia. Among other volunteer efforts he remains active with the Handicap Ramp Ministry of Interfaith Outreach Association.
The Hobbs describe themselves as enthusiastic members of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Mary Jane’s recreational activities include gardening, bridge, and cooking. Bill also likes gardening and yard work when he isn’t playing golf or fly fishing. They both like to travel and agree that Westminster Canterbury is the “right” place for them at this time in their lives.
