Barbara Rogers
Barbara Rogers was born in Fairbanks, Alaska and grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. She attended Monticello Preparatory School in Godfrey, Illinois and studied art at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Arkansas. After college, Barbara had an experience of a lifetime by spending two and a half years in Paris with an American family teaching English to the children.
After returning to the States, Barbara married and had two children. Her first husband’s career with Coca Cola moved the family to Virginia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and finally Connecticut. Life in Stamford, Connecticut enabled Barbara to continue her fascination with water as a swimmer and where sailing became a love which she says she still dreams about to this day.
After divorcing her first husband, she decided to downsize and live on a boat, and it was at this Stamford marina where she met Len Rogers while looking for health insurance. They developed a five-year friendship that eventually resulted in a second marriage for Barbara and three stepsons. For eleven years until her retirement Barbara served as a sale rep for Coverall Cleaning Concepts, a company that provided cleaning services to offices and medical facilities. Her territory covered Southern Connecticut and Westchester County, New York.
While looking for a retirement location Barbara and Len discovered and fell in love with Altavista, Virginia where they lived for 16 years before Len’s death in January 2022.
From their involvement with the National Center for Healthy Veterans to their local YWCA where they were honored with an award for their participation in establishing a Domestic Violence shelter, Barbara and Len shared many volunteer hours in their community. Barbara volunteered for Centra for five years in the Gretna cardio rehab and physical rehab units, and she and Len both volunteered as visitors to healthcare residents here at Westminster Canterbury from 2007-2010. Barbara looks forward to joining WC’s Spiritual Life Visitation Team.
Give Barbara a warm WC welcome when you cross paths. Chances are you’ll see her in the pool (she’s accustomed to swimming laps five days a week) and on the grounds where she may be spotted with her rescue miniature Goldendoodle, Scout.
