Robert & Barbara Baker

Robert was born south of Broad in Charleston, South Carolina.  Barbara is a Bostonian.  They met while Robert was a Navy nuclear instructor at Combustion Engineering in Connecticut.  Barbara was finishing up a student nursing surgical affiliation in Hartford, Connecticut. She studied and trained at Melrose Hospital and Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston, and is an RN. Robert is a mechanical/nuclear engineer and graduated from Clemson. He served in the nuclear submarine Navy.  Go Tigers!!

Barbara worked in the ER in Boston and OR room in Norfolk, Virginia. She helped start a women’s clinic at Clemson University and later served as director of health services at VES for 20 years.  Robert worked at B&W/Framatome for 44 years in startup, engineering and project management.  They have lived in Massachusetts, South Carolina, Ohio and Bonn, Germany.  Lynchburg has been their home the longest - 48 years. They raised their two children, Trey and Linley, in Lynchburg.

Robert is an avid golfer. He was Junior golf champion in South Carolina and was on the Clemson golf team. He is still shooting his age 82 or below!  He has served on boards in the community and has been on the POA board where they currently live for many years.  They call him the “Mayor”, because he is always heading up projects and also helping people with many home problems.  Barbara and Robert are members of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Barbara is an animal lover!!  She is also a watercolor artist, was a tennis player, is a walker and equestrian, plus a member of other community organizations.  Her passion is working with disabled or at-risk children and rescued horses.  Her love for both horses and children led her to being a member, then Chair, of the Board of Trustees at Brookhill Farm for many years.  If you have met her or know her you now know about Brookhill too!! Robert and Barbara have a sweet, lovely aussie named Finley and two cats, Poppy and Lilly.  Barbara still rides Kramer, a black Icelandic horse at Brookhill.

Barbara and Robert are proud grandparents of three grandchildren; one in South Carolina and two in Sun Valley, Idaho.
