Ann Hite
Before settling in Huntington, West Virginia, Ann Hite’s family had moved frequently while her father served in the U.S. Navy. After she graduated from high school in Huntington, Ann earned a degree in dental hygiene, married, and moved to Roanoke, Virginia, where her husband was a newspaper reporter. When they moved to Lynchburg for his new job in public relations, Ann began her long career as a Registered Nurse (RN) at the Central Virginia Training Center in Madison Heights, just across the James River from Lynchburg. The Center was a very large state residential facility and hospital for people with significant physical and/or intellectual disabilities. To help meet their need for an adequate nursing staff, the institution covered nursing school expenses for students who agreed to work at the Training Center for several years after they graduated.
When Ann graduated from the Lynchburg College-Virginia Baptist Hospital nursing school, she joined the Training Center staff as a Registered Nurse and stayed for what would become a 35-year career there. She was certified in Rehabilitation Nursing and organized the first nursing pool for covering night-time emergency calls. Ann has a son who lives in northern Virginia and a grandson who lives in Richmond. She enjoys movies, reading, and her book club, as well as outdoor and fitness activities, which she looks forward to continuing at Westminster Canterbury after living in Forest, Virginia, for many years.
