Born on March 10, 1945, Judy grew up in Fredericksburg, VA with an older sister named Fenton and a younger brother named Cabell. Shortly before the beginning of her senior year at Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, VA, Judy began dating a handsome young man from the University of Virginia named Doug Lee who had a dazzling smile! Judy & Doug were married on Saturday, June 29th, 1968 at St. George’s Episcopal Church in her home town of Fredericksburg.
Doug had just completed a five-year program at UVA in aerospace engineering and had received his commission in the U.S. Navy. Judy had finished her first year of teaching in Culpepper, Virginia in 1967-68. That was an extremely challenging year, because it was their first year of integration and racism was rampant. Early on, Judy concluded that this was not just among the students but included the teachers and principal as well. That experience quickly transformed her into a person who cares deeply about the importance of respecting all people and challenging racism. It had a powerful influence on her teaching career over the years. As a teacher, Judy discovered what she calls “the miracle of love”. Every year she taught, she grew to love every single student—all one hundred sixty-some children. What joy!
Doug retired from BWXT in April, 2018 after a career of 45 years with Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) and BWXT. He served in organizations providing design, equipment manufacturing and training for nuclear and non-nuclear applications.
They have had so many remarkable opportunities and adventures. Every place they lived has enriched their lives in numerous ways. For example, while living in Canada, Judy earned a post master’s degree as a marriage and family therapist and created a successful private counseling practice. Back in Lynchburg, Judy was President of the League of Woman Voters and currently leads the Saint John’s Women’s Study group.
Doug currently serves on the Board of Directors of Electronic Design and Manufacturing Company and the Lynchburg Museum Advisory Board and Foundation. Doug is also Treasurer of Interfaith Associates, and Board Member for Opera on the James. He previously served on the Board of Directors for the Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER) and is a former Trustee of the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center and is a Master Gardener. He and Judy have two children and two grandchildren and attend St John's Episcopal Church.
Over the years, Judy and Doug lived in Northern Virginia, Pittsburg, Lynchburg, Akron, Ohio, Lynchburg again, Ontario, Canada and then back to Lynchburg. On Thursday, September fifth, 2024, they made their 8th and final move—right here to Westminster Canterbury. They say they love their apartment and so do their two small, white dogs, Lily and Sophie. They are enjoying friends they have known a long time as well as making new friends.
