Julius & Jan Sigler
Jan and Julius Sigler have lived in Lynchburg since 1967. Jan was born in Washington DC and grew up in the Maryland suburb of Mt. Rainier. Julius was born in Kissimmee, Florida, and grew up in Central Florida. When he traveled from Orlando to enroll at Lynchburg College in the fall of 1958, Lynchburg and Orlando were about the same size in population. They met during his senior year at LC and her freshman year when they were “vertical” suite mates.” His third-floor room was directly above her second-floor room in the old Westover Hall. Following their marriage in 1965, they lived in Charlottesville for two years while he completed graduate study before moving to Lynchburg where Julius began a long career teaching physics at Lynchburg College.
Jan was a full-time mom, caring for their three sons: Jonathan, who died in January of 2025, Jaime, who works as a manager in the Waste Management Division of BWXT, and Jeffrey, who teaches Environmental Sciences at the Watkinson School in Hartford, CT. Despite the demands of home, she found time to be a volunteer in the city schools, in the libraries at Sandusky Elementary and Middle Schools where she often tutored students with reading difficulties. She served for many years on the board of the Quaker Memorial Day School and as an active member of the Lynchburg College Women's Club. She provided both time and energy to various booster groups, including the Lynchburg Strings Boosters and the Heritage High School Athletic Boosters. She baked and helped with line-ups for about 20 years of summer Monday nights with the Sandusky Swim team. She volunteered to work in the bookstore and the theatre office at the College. When Jeff was in middle school, she was recruited to work full time in the Alumni and Development Offices at LC. Her longest and most enjoyable assignment was to develop and direct the College's Parents' programs. She retired from LC in 2022 and continues to volunteer to write letters of condolence and congratulations to LC alumni.
Julius taught physics as well as occasional courses in related disciplines. He directed the LC Senior Symposium for about 20 years and served in various administrative roles, including eight years as Dean of the College. He has served the community in various ways, as a frequent volunteer in the city and area schools, as a member of various organizations supporting the youth of Central Virginia, including three terms on the Lynchburg City School board and in various roles with the Central District of the Blue Ridge Mountains Council of the Boy Scouts. He served for about 20 years as an elected representative of the city on the Robert E Lee Soil and Water Conservation District Board.
Before advancing age and COVID happened, they enjoyed traveling: many trips to Florida to visit family, various cruises, to the Mediterranean, the Baltic, and Alaska, as well as trips to Germany and most recently to Scotland. Jan loves to cook, to sew when her eyes allow and to craft. She also loves convoluted mystery shows. Julius describes himself as a teacher and he has really enjoyed his participation in the W-C University. Teaching is his way of learning. He also enjoys sports of any variety, reading, especially history when he finds time, and listening to a wide variety of music. Both are looking forward to joining the welcoming W-C community to be with friends and to make many new friends.
