Resident Website
Westminster Canterbury
Resident Website
There are three main security levels associated with the resident website. At the time of site implementation, it was decided the site should be limited to our residents and their families. Subsequently more were added as mentioned below in the Published Viewers paragraph.
Owner: From Google Sites' perspective there is, and can only be, one owner at a time for a given website. In the case of this Resident Website a "Person” named WCOwner is the Owner. This owner can perform all functions pertaining to the website. These include creating, editing, and deleting the website itself. The owner duties include the authorizing of all subordinate security levels.
At this time an administrative staff person, the three principal developers, the Information Services Director, and certain others including Marketing personnel have “Owner” editing capability by virtue of knowing WCOwner's "personal" password. (The Marketing people were so included because their duty includes the creation of Biography webpages for new residents.)
It should be understood that more than one of the above persons can be simultaneously signed on as "WCOwner" and make changes. Care, therefore, must be exercised that simultaneous updates do not interfere with each other. The sites software does flag simultaneous updaters on a common webpage.
Editors: This group is used in situations where it is desired or necessary to have some personnel who can work on editing pages BUT not be able to PUBLISH We have not, to this point, found it necessary to so organize. It can be useful where the actual publication of updated pages needs to be centralized so that multiple “Owners” cannot simultaneously make interfering updates. It also could be used to limit new "trainees".
Published Viewers: This group can view, but not update, the pages of the website. The website is not a public site but rather a site that can only be viewed by those specifically authorized by WCOwner. Residents, Canterbury Club, Azalea Option, close family members, and staff may receive such viewing authorization..
NOTE: When one is adding user authorizations they should also delete any persons known to be no longer using the website.
To be authorized to view our Westminster Canterbury Residents' website a person will need to have a Gmail address or create a Google account using your non-Gmail address (see below).
Owners Procedure to Authorize:
Sweep up on any page to reveal a “pencil” icon in the lower right corner
Click on that icon
Click on the “Share with others” icon at the top of page
Enter the Email address of the person to be authorized and the authority that they are being assigned. (“Published Viewer” is the most common. “Editor” or “Owner” is assigned only to those trained and approved for these “powerful” levels.)
WARNING: Since the registration default authority used by Google Sites is "Owner", it is advised that the entry be doubled checked to assure "Published Viewers" are not authorized as an "Owner".
In the earlier “Classic” Google sites editing permission could be granted at the webpage level. Such is not an option in the “New” sites. This will explain some of the workarounds that are described elsewhere.
Google Registration Procedure
You may elect to sign up for a Gmail address or register a non-Gmail address by going to:
https://accounts.google.com/SignUpWithoutGmail?hl=en
"Use my current email address instead" should be selected for registering a current (non-Gmail) address. When asked for a password, your current password for the account should be used. It should not be changed at this point. A regular phone number may be used if no mobile phone. This is used to send a confirmation code.
Otherwise continue with the form to acquire a Gmail address of your own.
